#MHAW17 Transitional Housing Services

Oxfordshire Mind’s transitional housing service forms a key part of our supportive community work. The transitional housing service supports people who may have previously had no fixed place of residence for some time, people discharged from hospital wards or those who, for a variety of reasons can’t continue to stay where they are.

To date Oxfordshire Mind provide accommodation support to over 80 people who are enduring mental health issues, this is due to be increased with the addition of new housing projects in Abingdon and Didcot later this year.

The support which is provided to Oxfordshire Mind housing service users is tailored to individual needs. The Oxfordshire Mind approach to housing is unique, tailored and supportive.

Here we share a service user’s experience of using Oxfordshire Mind transitional housing (Sajeel Nasar):

“I was offered a room at this property by Oxfordshire Mind in June 2014. I had just finished a course at Oxford Brookes University which I had taken part time so as not to cause me too much stress. I accepted this place and was given an assured tenancy agreement. This meant that as long as I engaged with Mind services, including support meetings etc., I would be dealt with properly according to the ethos of Oxfordshire Mind.

This proved handy because in December that year I had a relapse because I stopped taking my medication without telling anyone. Well, I was assessed under section 135, a police instigated assessment and had to re-engage with taking my medication. But Mind were very supportive of me when I was unwell and when I restarted taking my medication. I was always dealt with politely even when I lost my temper on a few occasions. I am very grateful to Oxfordshire Mind for offering me a place to stay in 2014 and would not mind staying here for a bit longer because I feel very comfortable in this shared house.”
