February is LGBT History Month. It is a month-long annual celebration of lesbian, gay, bisexual trans, and non-binary history, including the history of LGBT+ rights and related civil rights movements. In the United Kingdom it is celebrated in February each year, to coincide with the 2003 abolition of Section 28.
Each year LGBT+ History Month recognises the contribution of lesbian, gay, bi and trans people to history, and the history of the LGBT rights movement. We have seen many successes over the last few decades. But there is still a long way to go. Many of us are still struggling.
Those of us who identify as LGBTIQ+ are more likely to experience a mental health problem. This is because of the bullying, rejection, stigma and discrimination we still routinely experience. For some of us the pandemic may have made a lot of these realities worse. We may struggle to access services. We may feel more isolated or face discrimination from those we’ve had to live with.
This LGBT+ History Month, we stand in solidarity with all LGBTIQ+ people who experience mental health problems, past and present.
